History and Modern Studies play a vital role in today’s society and the department aims to ensure each young person has a learning experience which enhances their understanding of the world, both past and present. We promote opportunities to develop important attitudes such as respect for the values, beliefs and cultures of others; openness to new thinking and ideas; and a sense of responsibility and global citizenship.

"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but rising every time we fall"

Confucius, Chinese Philosopher

"If at first you don't succeed try, try and try again."

Robert the Bruce, King of Scots

"Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it."

Edmund Burke

In History and Modern Studies we emphasise the development and application of skills. The focus on evaluating sources and making decisions develops thinking skills, as well as skills in literacy and numeracy. Investigative and critical thinking activities give our pupils opportunities to gain important experience in contributing to group work and working on their own.

Pupils have many opportunities to develop their interest in History and Modern Studies within and beyond the classroom. As a department we organise trips to London and Auschwitz, visits from guest speakers and collaborations with the world of work.
